Depends on what you want out of the car.... Luxury... or sport.
If your a luxury guy that wants speed as well... you might as well get the M5 with the DYNAN package - it's a BMW authorized upgrade that is FUCKING KICK ASS... and dosn't mess up the Dealer Warranty.
But, if you like a fast more manuverable vehicle you may want to look into something that is 4-wheel drive.. like an AUDI. Audi's do not have the reputation as BMW of couse...
But!!!!...Nothing 2 wheel drive can out handle a 4 wheel drive vehicle such as an Audi S4 or VW R32. The cornering and handeling is IMMENSLY SUPERIOR.
The lates advances in traction control do help out on the 2 weel drive vehicles... but it still doesnt' step up to 4 weel drive. I DEFINTIELY think you will think twice after driving say... and Audi S4 or S8 or A8. 80K is a nice ride... I would definitely test drive some other vehicles before being set on the 5 series.
1 thing I found very annoying about the BMWs (and rear wheel drive vehicles in general) is a slight delay in sterring response. Really tear it up on the test drive and you'll see what I mean. The steering delay response on the M-Coupe was so bad... I cut the test drive short.
Don't get me wrong... The M5 is a NASTY FUCKING BITCH!!!! (great car)
M5 quarter mile time is 13.4 seconds... only 1 10th slower then the smaller and more manuverable M3 at 13.3 seconds. So not a big performance difference on strait runs. The M5 also has the quickest stopping distance of any stock vehicle at 60-0 in 2.0 seconds (that beats the M3).
The Mercedes AMG series is also to be taken seriously... but its a completly different ride as well as looks. However, some AMG's are totally over-rated so like the other guy said "Do your research... and
test drive everything a while". The dealer in my town will let me take vehicles for a day or 2 on a purchase this size so you might try that.
