I would classify this thread as "Beg for ridicule" spam. Not as prevalent as "naked spam" [ex: I sale you short ICQ UIN or 10 million images for sale for $15 or 40 Billion Emails for $15 ] or "tag team spam" [ex: "How can they offer hosting for .15 a gig?" or "Sponsorblah blah sucks" ] Here's the elements of the beg for ridicule spam
1) cryptic message that obliquely asks people to ridicule you
2) URL somewhere in your post [sig line is preferred]
Comments:
Pro -- if done right, can start a chain of funny responses, witty put downs, or some sort of hilarious piss fight
Con -- thread easily dies if the message is too cryptic or blatantly baiting. This is a fine line, these types of threads either succeed well or they don't get read.
Suggestions: put a lot of thought in your subject line, that is the meat and potatoes of your bait. Once the reader is looking at the main message...stay consistent with the subject line but don't be too vague.
Types of message board marketing approaches [or as cynics would say "message board spam tactics"]
1) blatant spam
2) tag team [question and answer]
3) fake piss match
4) beg for ridicule spam
5) harmless and subtle entertainment spam
6) contests
... see my other threads for additional types
