It didn't actually. Arnold competed at 6'2", 240lbs, even with a steroid boost. Coleman and the other heavies are doing 2/3rds less work in the gym and competeing in the 280lbs. range, with lower body fat %. Better medecine for sure, but also refined technique.

After 9 sets, if you're adhereing to the routine that most do (4+ reps per set to failure, no more than 7 reps or you need to add weight), then you legitimately can't do more sets without an extended break.
