For what it's worth, we've got a rough equivalent of guns-per-capita here in Canada with virtually no gun violence. We don't even generally use them for suicides (some hundred or so every year, if I recall the stats correctly).
The problem isn't with the guns, it's with the attitude, really. Ready availability of guns just make it easy to let attitude devolve into homocide, and myopic politicos decide that because they can't change people's shitty attitudes towards each other, at least they can try to make it harder for people to slaughter each other with ease.
