Steely Dan is awesome, but there are really not one of the contenders for the title, based on their importance in the history of Rock and Roll, and what they did:
My picks:
The Beatles - The band that showed the USA that the rest of the world could rock
Ramones - Invented Punk Rock before it was called that. It would be hard to find any rock band formed after 1985 that didn't have some influence from Ramones...
Nirvana - Taught everyone to remember what Rock was supposed to be
Deep Purple - A strange pick maybe, but they were the first heavy metal band and were playing it 40 years ago before it was even called Heavy Metal (The name came from Steppenwolf...).
The Yardbirds - The band that introduced the world to Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, and Jimmy Page
