please tell me you didn't ctrl-alt-delete and killed explorer.exe in task manager's processes list? see if its there if not then click on aplications tab then "new task" and type explorer, it should give you ur desktop back.
another thing that could have happened if ur taskbar is hidden and was moved to some other side of the monitor
