No, looks aren't everything and I know very few people who think they are. The people who do think looks are everything are usually idiots that nobody likes anyway. "The OC" and MTV are just TV, don't read too much into it. ;-)
Of course everybody likes to "look good" and likes it when other people "look good", but there's a huge difference between "looking good" and being "good looking".
