The weather has been screwed up and that has been proven scientifically. (No I'm not saying there is a weather machine) Years of polution, atomic tests, forcing populations to remain in 1 defined geographic spot, etc etc. Has caused this problem.

There are rules to living on this planet and as a species if we fail to do that... This planet will simply bitch slap us into place. IE: Hurricans, Earthquakes, Drought, etc.
