Well, I'd recommend checking out Negril. It's very friendly and safe for tourists, plus you get the Jamaica feel.
I'm good friends with Eek-A-Mouse (reggae legend from Kingston) and he portrayed Kingston not a good place to visit, not safe. Of course, I'm white, so I'd have a harder time fitting in with the rude boys. But still, I've been to Negril a few times and I'd go back a few more. Check out Ted Shroom Boom for some cake, tea and other goodies, tell him I said hello.
I've also got a guy (Judge) that can drive you around and get you anyting you need mon. He's a great guy and will look out after you for your whole trip. Let me know if you go there and I'll find his cell number for you.
