Print ads in alternative mags are risky. They all overstate the actual read distribution. They'll quote you figures like 300,000 copies distributed and thats all fine and dandy, but if you notice alternatives just get placed in big stacks all over town and a lot just sit there until another issue comes out.
Its also crowded ad space so you have design a really whacky looking ad to have a chance to stand out. That's the technique I've used over the years. Most of my ads were pretty ugly but they got visual attention because of that.
You're better off going into the major adult mags. Way better return. Though these days its not what it used to be.
Be sure to demand a discount on a trial run. Don't pay their rate card. Ask for the full year rate. They'll usually bend if you push hard enough.
