Emily Litella was the character's name. She was always complaining about things that sounded strange to her. Some of the best were her not understanding why people were opposed to "Sax and violins" on TV, and why people were so keen on preserving the country's natural "race horses" (What about other kinds of horses?)
And whenever she wanted to talk to Chevy Chase, she'd call him "Cheddar Cheese". And then they paired her up with Jane Curtin and she would do the "Ooooh, that's entirely different. Never mind." And then as Jane would close the news, she'd look at Jane and add "Bitch." to it. The truth is the first time Gilda did that, it was a complete ad-lib, but it got such a great reaction from the audience, they *had* to do it every time after that.
Ah Gilda surely is missed...
