Money is like anything else: when you are used to it, you take it for granted. And in Europe especially, a lot of "old" money is associated with land-owning, which often means cash poor since overheads are high and death duties take their toll on each generation. I often thought that the current European tendency to consider overt displays of wealth to be tasteless, was largely making a virtue out of a necessity...
