Verizon is usually pretty understanding the first time around. Call up customer service, complain. Tell them you were unaware and that you usually never go over, play dumb.
Ask to talk to a supervisor. Tell them when you signed up the Agent/Rep didn't properly inform you of charges (you won't get them in trouble)
If that fails go to the place where you bought your phone and complain, they are usually more than willing to call Customer Service for you and usually have a little more pull. You will get more co-operative reps at independant retailers (not Radio Shack) than you will at Corporate stores.
Some of my family members are on Verizon and I have done this for them many times.
