Real estate is a fairly sound investment. Buying lots pre-development in highly populated areas and then selling when the houses start going up. In my area pre-development condos are not bad either.
If you are handy at fixing houses you can get some good deals in auctions and then fixing them and flipping them.
Not really a quick way to make money but I can say it works. I used to do the rental property thing but it gets to be a pain in the ass after awhile.
