Police are investigating the theft of about 45,000 litres of fuel from a service station in Sydney's west.

Police last night arrested a 36-year-old man who has been questioned about the theft of 1,000 litres of diesel from a Shell service station on Windsor Road.

The rest of the fuel is yet to be accounted for.

Detective Inspector Gary Hutchen says police believe hoses, a pump and a home-made tank that were fitted inside a van were used to steal fuel from underground storage tanks.

"At the present time the man is assisting with police inquiries and he's expected to be charged later today with the theft of approximately 1,000 [litres]," he said.

"The van matching the description seen at the service station was seen by police and the vehicle contained what appeared to be a home-made tank in the rear, with a large quantity of liquid believed to be diesel."
