When you have billions of dollars there really are no excuses, but when you have billions of dollars, you'll be a target; they'd be better to have researched and then bought any companies that owned copyrights, etc.. so then whomever is making a claim against them can't go for a TON of money, because everyone knows Google has a TON of money..
