First, veneers are less expensive than crowns. Almost half as much. If someone paid twice as much they got ripped off really bad. Second, if you want to close a gap and there's going to be surfaces of a veneer that have no tooth behind it they will be extremely weak. Veneers look good but at the end of the day they are just an overlay and can chip or break very easily. Crowns will last a minimum of 10-15 years until you want to potentially have them redone and they are porcelain so they are stain resistant. If you have a problem with your gums receding though you want to get an all porcelain rather than a porcelain fused to metal (PFM) your dentist will know what a PFM or PFG (porcelain fused to gold) is and should also be familiar with an all porcelain version.
Side Note: I'm not sure about the strength of all porcelain compared to PFM or PFG but i'm certain they have made it to last. The pain is not any worse than having a tooth pulled and the discomfort afterward is about like having a filling done.
