Why wouldn't the pizza place charge a delivery fee? It costs the pizza joint more money to deliver the pizza to your house, of course they're going to charge you. Not only do they need to pay an extra employee, but they also need to pay for miles/gas. All of those extra costs cut into the profitability of the business.
Actually i have the perfect person here to set you straight ( a former pizza delivery guy )

Pizza place's make more delivering than anything else. They don't pay for gas/mileage ( well actually every pizza place set's their own rules but most of the big ones don't ) . But to boil it down into easy to understand terms , he ( the pizza delivery guy ) would make $250-300 a night , and pay for all expenses. Plus they usually pay them minimum wage ( and that just covers taxes basically because its mandatory to claim 10% of sales as tips) so they dont actually get a check.. just tips.

So he would clear 45k a year after expenses.
