There are good ways to do things that are a true value add, and then then are ways to do cross sells that are spammy and slimey. I would err to the side of legitimacy at all times. As a surfer you must always be aware of your purchases.

Caveat Emptor = Buyer beware.

Caveat Venditor = Seller beware. This is something that left wing consumerists live and die by. Disclosure and warnings and staunch regulation.

The answer is somewhere in the middle and it comes down to everyone being responsible for themselves.
