Exactly...if you optimize EVERYTHING you build from day one and submit EVERYTHING you build from day one, and keep in mind some general techniques and strategies...you'll do as well as any SEO/SES can do for you. A little research will take you far and save you money...Site Cloaking, huge doorway matrix's, and the rest of those old dirty trick's will only get you banned, then you're fucked.
IMHO, make your pages as truly relevant as possible, maybe toss in a few tricks here and there, get some spider food out there, and move on.
