You are off. They have been battling since the US invaded. The Anbar province is the largest in Iraq (1/6 of the country). Falluja and many other cities are located in Anbar. Dozens of battles have been fought.
As to your second response, WWi has nothing to do with this conflict. In WWi they were several standing armies fighting at the regimental and divisional levels. This is a stalemate which shouldn't happen. The US should be too advanced for this to happen.
It means we are undermanned and unwanted. It means the insurgents have learned how to fight us effectively.
