Some phobias seem silly, but we do develop unconscious assocations... everybody does. We may feel suddenly happy and not know why... the reason is because we've seen or experienced something that had a connection with another time, possibly in our youth, when we felt particularly happy.
Anyway, I have a friend who had to overcome a fear of large numbers. I thought it was silly and laughed at him... then he explained that when he was a kid, his brother was really into astronomy and would talk about just how big the universe was. It scared him to think about the vastness of the universe, and made him feel tiny. He associated that feeling of fear and isolation with the large numbers, probably because he had been told how many galaxes their are, and how many stars within each. I can understand this phobia, even if I don't relate.
Of course, he also said it was a mild phobia... not debilitating. He didn't start crying and quivering every time someone said "one trillion".
