It was a promotion that they told everyone about 1 year ago. It took place about a month or so after the .INFO promotions other companies were doing. You know, the 25 free, etc.. What they did was try to secure .INFO domains for you based on your already registered .COM (and .NET) domains.
It's confusing now, because most people forgot the promotion they told us all about almost a year ago. There was no charge for any of the names, and none of them were set to Auto-Renew. You can keep the ones you like, or just let them go. Why would you Renew names you don't like anyway ?

Word. I've got those renew mails for the .info domains too. But cant see why this should be scam. They dont charge you if you dont renew. You should LOVE RF!
