It seems to me, and I'm not expert, that beating George W. Bush in the last election should have been fairly easy. The anti bush sentiment in the United States (and around the World) was very strong. Nominating the most Liberal Senator, from Mass. was just about the dumbest thing that could have been done.
What if the Democrats had nominated General W. Clark? How could Republicans have said he doesn't understand millitary and what's going on in Iraq? They couldn't have. I'd imagine that while not perfect a career millitary man would have very few skeletons in his closet. Seems like he was the clear choice to beat Bush, and yet he didn't stand a chance.

Kerry had no skeletons in his closet except the ones the Republicans grew from whole cloth using their typical character assassination win at any cost no matter what it costs the country or how sleazy it is tactics. Look at what they did to one of their own, John McCain. There is NOTHING the hypocritical moral majority loving conservatives won't do, no depth to which they won't sink, in order to win an election.
They somehow made a war hero seem cowardly while they elevated a chicken hawk to war hero status. Doesn't matter how venal their sins or how transparent their propaganda, people like you will always be around to eat it up.
The democrats won't make hay out of Katrina. What they should and hopefully WILL do is make hay out of the incompetent response of the current administration, particularly an underfunded FEMA led by Bush's unqualified college buddies.
