I'll let you in on a process I picked up when thumbing all of our fhg's.
I assume you have a folder of full size pics you want to thumb.
I drop like 10 or 20 at a time into PS.
Select the "Rectangular Marquee Tool" and set it to "fixed aspect ratio 0f 1:1 and crop out the area you want if you were cropping for a square thumb. Hit save and on to the next.
When I am finished I have a whole folder of 1:1 aspect ratio pics that are still fairly large and all different sizes, usually over 600 x 600 +pixels still at this point. But they are all cropped and any more re-cropping and resizing can all be done in Batch mode from this point with excellent results every time.
