His right foot is actually much closer to you than his left. The bricks are painted in perspective so if you follow the edge of the brick from his left foot to his right, it appears to look like it's the same distance from you but at a lower level. If you look very closely at the seams, you'll also see his right foot (1st row and column of bricks) 'appears' to be behind his left (which is in the second), another illusion.
