When he says distributed I`m guessing he has a bunch of computers with nmap installed on them.This would bring the scanning time down if you are scanning for a lot of IPs
I remember reading a few months ago about a project that set out to map the internet using distributed scanners.They were setting off alarms everywhere.
Yup, called OS Fingerprinting. Basicly simultaneous scanning so you can use several systems to scan at once, all coordinated. It sets off alarms if you scan at to fast of a pace, but if you slow it down it all works well
