Video Formats - Need advise

I've recently started giving people video content in MPEG2 format (.m2p) because of it's small file size and high quality. However, it seems a lot of systems don't have the required codecs for this so it's not very convenient. Can anyone recommend an alternative? I'm trying to avoid a proprietary format like quicktime or window media.
