Actually, the Pinoy migration to Hawaii came in 2 waves--"manongs" or sugarcane workers which the US imported in the 20s because of anti-Chinese immigration restrictions and post-1965 immigration (the US lifted race-based/hemisphere-based restrictions). Much of the reason for the migration was economic. A few also left to flee the repressive Marcos regime during the 70s to mid 80s. Not too many fled because of the "morality police" here... although Im sure there are a few instances of that.
