More important is that it doesnt reflect the cost of gas at the pump - when the prices for crude oil went to their high in the 70s the cost at the pump for refined gas was still lower - although if you adjusted it for inflation the price was the equivalent of about $3 a gallon - we just didnt have the psychological effect because we were actually paying about $1.25 a gallon then
and of course you couldnt just go and buy gas - it was rationed so that you had to wait in line on certain days to fill up your tank - something they ought to be doing now but the SUV lovers wouldnt stand for it
Back when it hit those highs is also when the era of the Japanese cars started coming into the US - before that it was very rare to see a Datsun or Toyota and the other companies out there now didnt even exist
