Nobody here in Holland stopped driving because of the prices (and they increased very fast over te last few years). People give up other things, but not driving (and they shouldn't).

You're forgetting that Holland is smaller than many of our States. If you haven't been to the United States, things are a lot more spread out (except the MAJOR metro areas) which causes public transportation to be a lot less efficient and desirable. It is very hard to compare the two.
Last summer a few of my friends went to Germany. They didn't rent a car and very rarely used a taxi. If I were to take a trip to Miami or Las Vegas, I would either rent a car or make use of taxis often.
