I always thought Reds were flats fish and flounder were deep water? I plan on going out Grouper digging next weekend in 135' - 60 miles out. I get out at least once a month to keep my sanity.

Next to the Jettis in the channel we were fishing between 20' - 40' deep. I have caught them in the flats areas like you say in as little as 10 inches of water as well as 6 or 7 miles offshore in about 75' of water. The backwater reds are usually the smaller ones and are much darker in color. But I have seen some just as big as these caught in Mosquito Lagoon in the flats. You go out there and pole around untill you see their tail and dorsal fins sticking out of the water while they have their nose down in the bottom searching for crabs. Throw a pinfish in front of them and they can not resist.

Goodluck with the Grouper next week. I have some numbers that are about 60 miles offshore that we catch alot of grouper and red snapper. Helluva fight when you get out deep and hook onto a nice fish.

I've hooked a many a grouper and had to cut the line because I did not have my drag locked down to the max. They took my bait and shoot back in their hole and there is no pulling them out most of the time.

Cheers,
BV
