I had over 20k AA referrals and over 50k referrals between all of the get paid to surf programs. I would run around 8 banners at a time between the different programs that would consume my dialup connection. I made over 5k/month from get paid to surf for about a six month stretch.
I do believe permissive marketing can work in certain cases, but obviously it wasn't a profitable model at that time. Alladvantage's strategic plan was simply to pump up their membership base while operating on a loss using funds from venture capitalist. 1999 was the height of the dot com IPO and they simply were trying to become an attractive enough entity with a huge member base to eventually get to an IPO. March of 2000 began the dot com implosion and it wasn't long after that, that paid to surf became defunct.
I attribute much of my online marketing skills today to what I learned during those get paid to surf days as everyone was in a frenzy to garner referrals.
