I disagree with most of you. The most depressing thing about all of your reactions is the total disregard for the life of man. Five years of a man's life is worth exponentially more than the entire life of a cat or any other animal for that matter. Men have achieved more in one day than animals have for millions of years.
You equate violence directed towards animals as though it were violence against people. You make the killing of an animal nearly as much a crime as a the killing of a man. This is how your psychopaths begin to believe that it's okay to kill people. You raise animals to the level of men. Your belief holds true in both directions. You therefore believe that men are just animals.
So the guy that did torture the cat definitely needs psychological help and probably medication. Maybe even a fine. But life in prison? The death penalty? It's profoundly depressing that the life of a cat has become more valued by society than the life of a man.
