The other thing to keep in mind with designing action ads such as banners is that you aren't necessarily looking to create the "prettiest" one. I've found from years of running all sorts of ads that its the ones that don't look the norm that really pull well. If a banner is too sharp look sometimes it just blends and doesn't grab attention as well as one that frankly might even look funky or downright ugly.
On all adult pages the visual competition is fierce. The users eyes are bombarded with color and imagery. So if you make something that doesn't seem to fit it will stand out and provoke interest.
I used this trick a lot with 900 ads in adult mags. Started doing a lot of them in black and white instead of color. Gave some a retro look even. The response was amazing because looking at a page with all color ads and then the eye picks up one in B&W and you can't not see it.
