My reference point for champagne is still the '95 Veuve Cliquot Gold Label Brut. Cost: $40-$60 retail. I've had all the tete' cuvees from '90, in fact I had Veuve Cliquot's Le Grande Dame bottling this weekend, and I don't believe any of them comes close.
Actually, one comes close, and its similarly reasonably priced. Billecart-Salmon's NV rose' is always a winner with me.
If you are intent on blinging with wine and don't want wine cognoscenti to laugh at you for chugging Cristal from the bottle, pick up a magnum or two of any of the following: '47 Cheval Blanc, '61 Petrus, '45 Mouton Rothschild, or 1900 Ch. d'Yquem. All are viable candidates for the best wines in their classes ever produced, all are drinking very well now, and all will cost you $20,000 - $50,000 a pop. That'll shut 'em up
Just invite me to the tasting!
