It wasn't always thus... between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers was, 6000 years ago, the cradle of civilization and had the most tenable land around. The whole desert thing is a more recent issue.
But then, the 1000 virgins thing is a relatively recent thing as well... Mohammed didn't arrive until 570A.D., and didn't really get a following until the 600s. Perhaps there was a renegotiation going on at that time. Certainly seems as though the mohammetans got the better deal of it, 'cuz islam spread fast from what's now turkey eastward to nepal within a century, and thence lay to waste to / bring enlightenment to pretty much all of north africa and moved into the byzantine christian lands westward. Getting and developing the stirrup (from china) to more effectively use horse power helped a lot.
