You know, I know enough about the bible to know that the vast, vast majority of his so-called supporters are in direct opposition to his views of life.
It's easy to scoff at the 'true believers' who basically operate their lives at the behest of today's pharasees, who claim to be the only true arbiters of the word of god, whose "fatwas" (for lack of a christian equivalent term) are based on twisted, narrow and hate-filled interpretations of the bible.
Would jesus condemn gays?
Would he bomb brown people?
Would he assassinate doctors who performed abortions?
Would he amass insane amounts of wealth in his own name, giving lip-service to the poor while secretly giving worship to mammon?
The bottom line is that far too many of the people who profess a belief and love of christianity are really just people looking for a publically acceptable excuse to feel superior. Tribalism in the guise of faith, hypocritical to the core, will never capture more than the easily lead and the weak of will.
I'm no great believer in god... but if there is a god, and if it gives anything close to 2 squirts of piss about humanity, the best thing it could do would be to cleanse the earth of all of these fake 'followers', whose aggregate damage has done more harm to the planet than all the secular greed and ambition combined since the beginning of time.
If you want to be true to what jesus preached, then all you really need to do is keep some basic rules in mind: "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you", and "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone."
