But when people decide to fight this stuff out on the boards, do they think about what it is going to cost them? Yet again we have two people demonstrating to potential customers and/or affiliates that neither of them acted very professionally: no clearly spelled out contract; misunderstandings on both sides about rights and responsibilities, with neither living up to what the other expected; and when everything goes pear-shaped, they start squabbling like schoolkids.

You can't have it both ways: either this board has influence or it doesn't. If not, then these dramas are just a waste of time. But if people do pay attention, the vast majority of fights like this are going to cost both parties more than the sum at stake.

If someone really thinks he/she has been wronged and there are no jurisdictional issues to make it impractical, use the law. Any sponsor, designer or content provider with a decent business should have a lawyer on retainer and even if not, it doesn't usually take too much imagination to make a claim big enough to be worth pursuing. When the case is won, the C&D order effective, or whatever, make a simple announcement and then move on...
