I don't think that taxes on alcohol and tobacco have made them respectable at all. Just look at recent massive fines levied against tobacco companies and numerous commercials against cigarette use. A 1% tax would quickly be increased to enormous levels over time just like other sin taxes. Porn is not a "sin". Alcohol and tobacco cause thousands (millions maybe?) of deaths every year. The taxes offset increased insurance and healthcare costs associated with them. Porn doesn't cost consumers anything and has no negative side effects (expect maybe increased lube expenditures). Therefore porn is not a "sin" as used legally. Childporn has nothing to with mainstream porn. CP creators certainly aren't going to be paying taxes so its pretty much irrelevant. Why would they tax us? We don't create childporn. Alcohol and cigarettes certainly cause death. There is no parallel. Any cheap filtering software can stop your kids from seeing porn. Why tax?
