Keep in mind, sometimes weighted as-paths are a good thing.
Sometimes just because a path is shorter, doesnt mean it's better. If an ISP optimizes routes based on the actual shortest path (in terms of latency), would that not be better? Of course it would! as-path is a pretty arbitrary piece of information, and you can use many other metrics to weight it into better routing.

I doubt there's more than a couple of hosts out there who do that, but I know of at least one ;)
