Good point. Actually it was cocaine that provided the COCA in COCA COLA. It was originally advertised as some sort of health elixir. Caffeine eventually replaced Cocaine in the Coca Cola formula.

Sherlock Holmes was addicted to cocaine & back in the day it was believed to be non-addictive. Many men abused cocaine during those days without knowing it was habit-forming or bad for them. Nicholas Meyer's "The Seven Per-Cent Solution" (1974) is a good look at Holmes dealing with his addiction.
