Simplicity is better. The more complex a system is, the greater likelihood of failure of that system... in the case of a bomb, the more complex it is, the greater likelihood of it failing and blowing the snot out of YOU.
IEDs are effective precisely because they're so simple. Small, powerful, and anyone with basic chemistry and electronics skills can put one together with a reasonable expectation of survival and resonable expectation of causing casualties.
