i don't believe that parents automatically deserve extra respect - even though the most abusive ones i know of demand it.
my mother earned my respect - she took good care of us, taught us that reading was fun, and love us unconditionally even now. as a result, i love her and enjoy talking with her, and i'm happy to go visit regularly. i'm happy to know her - and proud to say she's my mom.
