From a legal perspective, you may be charged with assault, however I doubt it. You were doing good and acted in self defence. As soon as the guy flashed the knife in your face, you had every right to hit him. And the time before you hit him you were protecting the cabbie. You can claim you were temporarily insane when you saw the two guys beating him. I'm not a legal expert, but I really don't see how a judge could convict you for assault when you're protecting an old cab driver. He may claim you acted unreasonably with too much force, but I don't think he will. If you shot him, and he had no weapons, then it's a different story, but he had a knife and a iron pipe, so I don't see how you what you did would be called "unreasonable".
