i was never sure about this one, BUT...lower your body to the level of the dog, dont get down on all fours :D, just crouch down while keeping eye contact. it will come as a surprise to him and won't know what to make of it and will usually back away. I was skeptical about this one, so i tried it a couple of times with dogs barking at me from behind fences...and guess what. they all quieted down and backed away(sometimes ran away as if i scared the piss out of them)...I'm not sure if this works when a dog wants to attack you (being at his level, you're giving him a perfect opportunity to bite you in the FACE...which is much worse than being bit in other body parts, except for your crotch), but give it a try with dogs behind fences and let me know....it's supposed to work.
