Public assistance programs like welfare should be applauded by the wealthy and not castigated. Welfare programs are not without their problems, and you will always have people taking advantage of any system, be it food stamps or their 1040 tax form. There is no denying though that food stamps help more needy folks than cheats, and focus should be made on addressing the cheats than talking about taking food out the mouths of the truly poor.
One thing to consider if you are wealthy. Public assistance should be looked at like cheap insurance to maintain the stability of the system that has allowed you to prosper. Put people in a situation where they cannot feed themselves or put shelter over the heads of their family and you have the recipe for civil unrest. Don't think we are above having mobs running through the streets of your gated communities, it could happen.
