All possibly true. What bothers me most is that the Bush administration and its allies have aggressively exploited patriotism and nationalistic sentiment to completely stifle the democratic process of discussion and debate on this issue. No elected official can say a thing for fear of the administration and its right wing nutso allies screaming about any discussion giving "aid and comfort to our enemies", as DeLay put it after Tom Daschle voiced some very mild concern a couple of months ago. That is the root of every sort of tyranny.
Hermann Goering said it best:
"Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country."
