1. check for how long they've been in business
2. search for reviews about them
3. test their support, send them e-mails at different hours, try to call their phone...
4. ask them about some clients they host
5. ask them about the number of employees (vibehosting is one man show)
6. ask them about the network, if they own the servers or they rent them, if they have their own space in a dc, if they have their own ips...

having checked this things I'm sure the list will get pretty short.

Not saying that someone that doesn't meets all criterias can't provide a good
hosting environment, however if you're running a bussines its not worth saving a few bucks.
Ask yourself how much you got to lose in case of downtime, if you lose nothing they you can go with whatever shitty host you find. If you lose money then consider spending those money on a host that wont cause
you this kind of troubles.
