Speculation that Apple Computer will do for video what it has done for music gained momentum Monday, amid reports that it is negotiating for the rights to sell downloadable music videos through its iTunes Music Store.
Some Apple observers interpreted such talks as a precursor to the widely anticipated release of a multimedia version of the iPod that would play video, as well as music. Other industry analysts consider such a development unlikely -- and note that Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs has repeatedly denied such a product is in the works.
An Apple spokeswoman, Natalie Kerris, declined to comment on Monday's Wall Street Journal article, which cited unnamed entertainment industry executives as saying the new video iPod could be announced by September.
Several entertainment industry sources confirmed negotiations are taking place.
A move into online video distribution would broaden Apple's digital entertainment reach and could potentially unlock a new source of revenue for the Cupertino company.

Even if it didn't work for music videos.. I'm sure some entrepreneurial adult company would be able to make the most of that technology!
So if they make them, would you buy one? Or would the size of the screen put you off?
